Chicago Cubs dial Motorola: Telecoms company’s logo to feature on all home, road and alternate jerseys during the regular season and postseason.
Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Chicago Cubs have agreed a jersey patch partnership with Motorola.
Contract:
- Multi-year contract to see Motorola’s ‘batwing’ logo on all home, road and alternate jerseys
- Mobile manufacturer to benefit from ballpark exposure, including both the permanent and rotational signage behind home plate, and in-gam activations
- Motorola’s razr+ smartphone to be used to capture social content as the official smartphone partner of the Cubs
- Cubs shortstop Danby Swanson to become a spokesperson for Motorola
- Fundraiser sponsorship opportunities to be developed with Cubs Charities
Context:
While no financial terms were disclosed, the Cubs’ chief commercial officer Colin Faulkner told The Athletic that the partnership was in the “upper end” of MLB deals.
The Cubs become the 23rd MLB franchise to have a jersey patch partnership, with this deal coming a day after the Philadelphia Phillies agreed their own. The New York Yankees are reported to have the most lucrative jersey patch contracts of all teams, with their deal worth at least US$25 million per season.
Motorola already has a jersey patch partnership with another MLB team in the San Diego Padres, which is reportedly worth US$10 million each year. It also has a jersey patch deal with the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Chicago Bulls, making this the Cubs deal its second sponsorship with a Chicago-based franchise.
Comment:
“We took great care when it came to selecting a jersey patch partner and are thrilled to welcome back Chicago-based Motorola to the Cubs,” said Alex Seyferth, Cubs vice president of corporate partnerships. “Through this partnership, we’re aligning two iconic Chicago brands through innovation and tradition.”
