New York Liberty and Barclays ink jersey patch deal

Multi-year agreement sees Barclays named WNBA franchise’s official banking partner.

The Women’s National Basketball Association’s (WNBA) New York Liberty have revealed Barclays as their new jersey patch partner.

Contract:

  • Bank secures ‘marquee’ jersey patch placement as part of multi-year contract
  • Barclays named Liberty’s official banking partner
  • Sponsorship also sees Barclays expand relationship with the nonprofit Good Shepherd Services’ Rebound Program

Context:

Financial details have not been disclosed but the Liberty and Barclays have described it as ‘one of the largest injections of sponsorship capital’ in the franchise’s history. The union adds to the bank’s naming rights deal for Barclays Center and its team sponsorship of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Brooklyn Nets.

The Liberty have had Webull as their main sponsor since 2021, which will remain the jersey sponsor, with the online trading platform’s logo displayed underneath the number. The Barclays logo will be adjacent to the Nike swoosh on the team’s shirt. The Liberty previously had Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) as their jersey patch sponsor since 2019.

In addition to the Liberty, Barclays’ women’s sport sponsorships include English soccer’s Women’s Super League (WSL) and Women’s Championship. The banks’ current tie-up until 2025 will see it invest more than UK£30 million (US$37.9 million) in the women’s and girls’ game.

Comment:

“We are thrilled to welcome Barclays as the Liberty’s official banking partner,” said Keia Clarke, New York Liberty chief executive. “This investment is another example of how women’s sports are capturing the hearts and minds of sports fans around the world.

“The commitment of Barclays allows the Liberty to continually grow our business and the broaden our impact. Our community is the ultimate beneficiary here, and we look forward working alongside Barclays to provide young New Yorkers with the opportunities to develop life skills, a shared sense of community, and self-confidence through basketball.”
