Nissan extends backing of Netball Australia

Nissan has renewed its sponsorship of Netball Australia until at least the end of 2026.

The Japanese carmaker will retain its position as a major partner of Netball Australia, with the deal incorporating the Super Netball club competition and the Australian national team.

Nissan has sponsored the governing body since the first season of Super Netball in 2017. The deal includes logo placement on the bibs of the national team, as well as branding on and around the court during the Super Netball season.

As part of the agreement, Nissan will also support Netball Australia’s community and pathway initiatives, including this month’s National Netball Championships in Tasmania and the Australian Netball Championships later this year.

Kelly Ryan, chief executive of Netball Australia, said: “In what is set to be a massive year for netball in Australia with the Commonwealth Games and our Suncorp Super Netball season, we are proud to continue our partnership with Nissan until at least the end of 2026.

“The support Nissan has shown across all levels of netball has been crucial in growing engagement and awareness around our sport, particularly in the Suncorp Super Netball League with the inception of Nissan Net Points.”

Nissan will also be continuing its sponsorship of Netball Queensland and the Queensland Firebirds, which compete in the Super Netball.

In a recent interview with SportBusiness, Nissan’s head of global sponsorship, Owen Hughes, said the company is likely to pivot away from striking global deals to focus instead on more ‘strategic partnerships’.

The company decided not to renew its global sponsorship agreement with the Uefa Champions League when it expired last June, opting instead to agree a regional package of sponsorship rights for the competition in China.

Netball Australia holds naming-rights deals with financial services group Suncorp and electricity and gas retailer Origin for the Super Netball and the national team, respectively. Suncorp’s deal runs until 2026, while Origin’s agreement expires at the end of 2022.

The 2022 Super Netball season commenced last weekend. Ahead of the start of the season, Netball Australia launched a new global streaming service for the competition and also agreed rights deals with UK pay-television broadcaster Sky and New Zealand-based telco Spark.
