Rafael Nadal signs up as Saudi tennis ambassador

Spaniard makes ‘long-term commitment’ to further grow the country’s interest in the sport.

Tennis icon Rafael Nadal has been appointed as an ambassador of the Saudi Tennis Federation (STF), as part of a wider push by the country to exert influence in the sport.

Nadal’s role is described as a ‘long-term commitment’ that aims to grow the sport in the Gulf nation. The Spaniard will make regular trips to Saudi Arabia each year, with the goal of helping increase interest in tennis amongst the state’s young population.

The partnership will also see the 37-year-old take an active role in the development of Saudi boys and girls who are playing tennis. As a result, the STF is working with Nadal on plans to establish a new branch of his academy within the country.

The STF also said that Nadal was ‘committed’ to supporting any future tournaments held in the country, as part of his ambassadorial role.

“Everywhere you look in Saudi Arabia, you can see growth and progress and I’m excited to be part of that,” Nadal said.

“I continue to play tennis as I love the game. But beyond playing I want to help the sport grow far and wide across the world and in Saudi there is real potential. The kids here today are looking to the future and have a real passion for all sports.

“If I can help them pick up a racquet or simply get fit and enjoy the benefits of healthy living, then I’ll be happy to have made a difference.”

Saudi Arabia secured its first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour event last year, as it was announced as the host for its Next Gen Finals until 2027. It was linked with hosting the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) finals event last year, and was recently reported to be in talks over staging the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup finals.
