2031 Ryder Cup returns to Spain after 34-year wait
  • Spain was first continental European nation to host event In 1997
  • Estrella Damm signs up as sponsor for the event
  • Barcelona touts ability to host global sporting events

The 2031 Ryder Cup will return to Spain for the first time in more than three decades, with the biennial team golf tournament between Europa and the USA to be held at the Costa Brava resort of Camiral, near Barcelona.

The 1997 contest at Valderrama was the first time the event had been held outside the US or the British Isles and the 2031 edition will be just the fourth time the Ryder Cup has been staged in continental Europe.

France hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup at Paris’s Le Golf National, while the 2023 tournament was in Rome.

Europe and the US alternate as hosts for the three-day event. The 2025 edition will play out at Bethpage Black in New York before Ireland’s Adare Manor receives the honour in 2027. Hazeltine National in Minnesota will assume the role of host two years later.

“Today’s announcement not only recognises Camiral as one of Europe’s leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup,” said Guy Kinnings, chief executive of the European Tour Group.

“The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world’s leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time.”

Spanish, Catalan and city officials have all welcomed the decision to award the Ryder Cup to Camiral, arguing it demonstrates Barcelona’s ability to stage global sporting events. Barcelona has previously hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics, is home to Formula One’s Spanish Grand Prix, and held the 37th America’s Cup last year.

As part of the agreement, Barcelona-based brewing company Estrella Damm will be designated as the official beer of the 2031 Ryder Cup, as well as the title partner for the DP World Tour’s Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship for five years beginning in 2026, with the 2028, 2029 and 2030 tournaments taking place at Camiral.

“This agreement has taken many months of collaborative discussions, so we are grateful not only to Denis O’Brien and his team at Camiral, but also to the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish Government, the Province of Girona and Barcelona Tourism for their vision and commitment to hosting this major global event,” added Kinnings. “We have also secured significant support from the private sector in Costa Brava and Barcelona, including Estrella Damm’s long-term commitment, which will play a big role in the road to Ryder Cup 2031 as we showcase the region to our global audience.”
