- Binding letter of intent signed but buyer yet to be named
- Aston Martin valued at UK£1bn in November 2023
The Aston Martin Formula One team have been valued at UK£2.4 billion (US$3.3 billion) ahead of their latest stake sale, as reported by Bloomberg.
Aston Martin Lagonda Holdings, the automotive manufacturer rather than the Formula One team itself, has agreed to sell its minority stake in the team for UK£110 million (US$145.7 million).
A binding letter of intent has been signed with a buyer, although chief executive Adrian Hallmark declined to name who is acquiring the stake.
This was an expected move from Aston Martin Lagonda, which announced in April that investment bank Raine Group had been employed to help find a buyer for its shares.
Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll owns both the Formula One team and Aston Martin Lagonda, so this move will not affect the longevity of the Aston Martin name in Formula One. The Race reports that Aston Martin’s sponsorship deal with the team will continue for another five years from next season.
According to The Race, the Aston Martin Formula One team’s title partner Aramco previously had a clause that entitled it to a ten per cent holding in the team under its sponsorship agreement.
The news underlines the soaring popularity of Formula One as the Aston Martin team continues to enjoy significant boosts in their valuation.
A private equity investment last year – reportedly from HPS Investment Partners and Accel – valued the team at UK£1.8 billion (US$2.4 billion). This followed Arctos Partners acquiring a minority stake in November 2023 that valued Aston Martin at UK£1 billion (US$1.3 billion).
Aston Martin are currently eighth in the Formula One constructors’ standings, one point ahead of Haas and 16 ahead of last-placed Alpine.
While the team’s on-track prospects have stalled this season, the combination of new managing technical partner Adrian Newey and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso makes Aston Martin an intriguing investment opportunity.
A shakeup of the technical regulations at the start of next season also means the competitive order is likely to shift, with Aston Martin essentially becoming a works team for Honda through a new power unit supply deal.
