T-Mobile has promised to help Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics organisers create the “most tech-forward” Games in history by deploying advanced network capabilities at key venues and facilities.
Contract:
- T-Mobile will use 5G technology to enhance connectivity and competition and non-competition venues across Southern California
- Operator will also provide more than 15,000 staff with push-to-talk radio services
- 5G Network slicing, which guarantees a pre-defined standard of coverage and connectivity, will be used to connect key staff and systems.
- Network will connect ticketing and point of sale systems, as well as secure, low-latency connectivity between competition venues and the International Broadcast Centre (IBC)
- T-Mobile will also use the games as a marketing showcase for other businesses
Context:
The role of official telecommunications partner is one of the most important at any Olympic Games given it includes a significant technological element. Without T-Mobile’s network, it will be impossible for mission critical systems to operate and there will be no television pictures to send around the world.
Usually fulfilled by a national incumbent, such as BT at London 2012 or Orange (previously France Telecom) at Paris 2024, there is no equivalent former state monopoly in the US to follow in this tradition. This has left T-Mobile, which claims to have the most advanced national 5G network in the US, to assume the role.
LA28 will be an unprecedented showcase for its business network capabilities, especially when it comes to 5G, building on previous partnerships with the likes of Major League Baseball (MLB), SailGP and the US PGA Championship.
Cisco has already signed up as official network equipment partner, while Deloitte has replaced Atos as lead technology integrator.
Comment:
“T-Mobile for Business has the advanced, next-gen technology that will help redefine how the Games are run and experienced — making them faster, more connected, and more immersive and epic,” said Mo Katibeh, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile Business Group. “We’re thrilled this technology will be put in play on the biggest stage in sports to support LA28’s goals to increase operational efficiencies, transform fan experiences and support a seamless broadcast.”
Coming next:
T-Mobile will now start testing its 5G network capabilities and deployment plans to ensure they are ready in time for the opening ceremony in three years’ time.
