Premier League UK TV audiences suffer ‘double-digit’ decline in 2024/25

Premier League UK TV audiences suffer ‘double-digit’ decline in 2024/25

Both Sky Sports and TNT Sports, the Premier League’s two main domestic broadcast partners, saw their viewing figures fall by up to 14 per cent last season, according to The Times.

Confirmed:

  • Sky posted average viewership per game of around 1.57 million, a ten per cent drop on the 2023/24 campaign
  • TNT Sports witnessed a five per cent drop for its Saturday lunchtime kick-off and a 17 per cent decrease overall when midweek fixtures are factored in
  • Sky posted 1.78 million and TNT recorded 1.15 million in 2023/24, a combined 2.93 million
  • Combined average of 2.52 million for 2024/25 represents a 14 per cent year-on-year decline

Context:

The Times reports that the figures were presented to English top-flight clubs at their annual meeting last week. Liverpool winning the title early, as well as a lack of a dramatic relegation battle, meant interest and viewership decreased over the last six weeks of the campaign.

The newspaper also suggests that Premier League games faced more competition from the English Football League (EFL), with pay-TV network Sky showing more games in the first year of a new rights deal.

The decline in domestic viewership for the English top flight is in line with the decrease in viewership in the US, which fell seven per cent YoY for NBC Sports.
