A total of 16.2 million viewers watched for England’s penalty shoot-out victory over Spain in the final of Uefa Women’s Euro 2025 on BBC and ITV’s digital platforms in the UK.
This was the first Women’s Euro final to be aired by both the BBC and ITV and the audience is the biggest achieved by any broadcast on British television in 2025.
The total figure is less than the 17.4 million who tuned into BBC’s coverage of England’s win over Germany in the Uefa Women’s Euro 2022 final, which was a record audience for a women’s soccer game in the UK and boosted by England being the host nation.
However, it is more than the 14.46 million who tuned in for England’s defeat against Spain in the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup final.
As is typical, the BBC attracted the lion’s share of viewers. BBC One’s linear coverage peaked at 11.6 million, with an additional 4.2 million streams recorded on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.
Meanwhile ITV’s coverage on ITV1 and ITVX peaked at 4.2 million. It says this represents an audience share of 25 per cent, an increase of five percentage points on its proportion of viewing for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup final, which was also aired by both broadcasters.
Across the whole tournament, the BBC’s television coverage reached 22.1 million viewers, and its digital platforms recorded 15.5 million streams, with 20 per cent coming from users aged between 16 and 35.
The BBC’s social channels achieved 231 million views, with TikTok accounting for 45 per cent of that. Three quarters of the audience for the BBC Sport’s Women’s Football TikTok account were aged under 34, with 39.3 per cent under 24. The most watched clip across all platforms was Lucy Bronze strapping her own leg in the quarter final against Sweden, which generated 12.5 million views.
The BBC Sport website was visited by 16 million unique users, with 10.1 million signed-in accounts interacting with Women’s Euro content – an increase of 15 per cent from Euro 2020. During the final itself, the BBC Sport’s live page was accessed 11.4 million times.
On the audio side, Radio 5 Live and Radio 5 Live Sports Extra commentaries were streamed 1.1 million times, a 122 per cent rise from Euro 2022.
“This final was a landmark moment in sporting history,” said Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport. “The kind of moment people will remember exactly where they were when they watched it. The incredible Lionesses took us on an emotional rollercoaster, and millions were hooked on BBC coverage from start to finish – from live streaming post-match analysis to millions following our live page and younger audiences in huge numbers on social media.”
