- Matthew Benham to remain majority shareholder
- Deal could see as much as 25% of the club changing hands
Premier League club Brentford have announced businessman Gary Lubner and filmmaker Sir Matthew Vaughn as minority shareholders.
Matthew Benham, who took full control of the Bees in 2012, will continue as majority shareholder and day-to-day control will remain in the hands of the club’s existing leadership team.
The deal values Brentford at around UK£400 million (US$536 million), according to Sky News.
South African-born Lubner is the founder of This Day Foundation and former chief executive of vehicle glass repair and replacement firm Belron, whose brands include Autoglass. Vaughn’s films include Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Kick-Ass and Kingsman.
The size of the pair’s shareholding in Brentford, who have played in the Premier League since the 2021/22 season, has not been disclosed, although the transaction could reportedly see as much as 25 per cent of the club ultimately changing hands.
Benham, whose finances helped Brentford climb from League One to the top tier of English soccer, has been openly exploring investment in the club since early 2024.
In February, Benham transferred his shares in Brentford into a newly formed holding company called Best Intentions Analytics (BIA). This change in ownership structure enabled the club to secure investment opportunities.
Confirmation of Lubner and Vaughn as directors of BIA is subject to Premier League approval. The investment into BIA, which is also the holding company for Spanish third division side Mérida AD, has been made via This Day.
“This is an exciting time for Brentford,” said Brentford chief executive Jon Varney. “The club has enjoyed significant success in recent years, and this investment will build on that progress to help us continue to challenge in both on-pitch performance and off-pitch commercial growth.
“It is vital to us that any new investors understand and reflect the values of our club. Since we first met Gary and Matthew, we have been aligned on how they can make a positive impact. They bring different but complementary expertise, and I am excited to see what we can collectively achieve.
“Matthew Benham remains a committed majority shareholder who has brought the club an incredibly long way in a short space of time. Together with our new investors we have a shared ambition for continued growth and to thrive in the world’s most competitive football league.”
